“Hǎishàng shēng míngyuè (Over the sea grows the moon bright); tiānyá gòng cǐshí (We gaze on it far, far apart.)” On September 7th, jointly organized by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) and Yang Shipin of China Media Group (CMG), the “Chinese Star” offline event themed “To experience Chinese customs during the Mid-Autumn Festival” officially kicked off in Beijing.
“Seeing, experiencing, and recording is believing”. This Mid-Autumn Festival event was hosted by Chen Beibei, hostess of CMG, with the topic of “reunion” and activities ongoing both online and offline. Wang Xuechun, a well-known media person, 13 outstanding “Chinese Bridge” contestants from 12 countries, and international students in China, gathered under the Baita Temple in Beijing. They exchanged stories of “Yuè (Moon)” in traditional courtyard houses, shared the culture of “Yuè (Moon)”, and experienced Mooncake making together.
The moon not only carries Chinese people’s wishes to the families they love and miss, but also means a lot in other cultures. During the event, international students from different countries shared the meaning of “moon” in their own countries. In Nigeria, the moon represents the beauty of women; in Ireland, the moon is inseparable from the legend of the “werewolf”; in Niger, the moon is also related to religious beliefs, indicating good health. By sharing with each other about the cultural connotation and understanding of “Bright Moon & Mutual Miss” and “Completeness & Reunion” in different countries and cultures, international young people experience the differences and emotional resonance of various civilizations in their interpretation of the moon.
In the “Gesture & Guess” session, the contestants learned about the cultural symbols, traditional customs and cultural connotations of the Mid-Autumn Festival by answering questions, and deeply understood the meaning of “reunion”. Among them, a student from Russia studying in China said: “I have lived in China for 17 years, and every year I spend the Mid-Autumn Festival with my parents. This year, participating in the theme event is the most meaningful Mid-Autumn Festival for me.” The contestant from Spain said excitedly: “The event of experiencing Chinese customs makes me systematically understand the historical and cultural background of the traditional Chinese festival Mid-Autumn Festival for the first time. It’s really meaningful!”
“Deepen friendship through communication and experience warmth by sharing”. In the final session of “Making Mooncakes together”, the contestants learned to make different flavors of mooncakes with happiness and excitement, and shared them with friends on site, expressing that this event made them feel at home.
At the same time, the guests coming for the theme event participated in the new media activities of the CCTV Mid-Autumn Festival Gala, with poetry as the link, exchanged ideas on “Mid-Autumn Festival” and “Moon” with the audience at home and abroad. With various screen terminals linked to each other, people home and abroad all appreciated the full bright moon at the same time and expressed their deep love of the moon culture. In the process of communicating and conversing with Beijing’s non-genetic inheritors, folklore experts and scholars, the international students in China deeply understood the traditional customs of Mid-Autumn Festival, deeply felt the traditional cultural charm of Mid-Autumn Festival, communicated and shared their feelings and friendship in the interactive sharing.
As a useful supplement to the “Chinese Bridge” competition, “Chinese Star” helps “Generation Z” to see and understand China, and guides foreign youth in China to read China. The campaign will adopt the “offline walk” approach, and work together with the outstanding contestants of “Chinese Bridge” to visit ten cities in China to strengthen the language and culture exchange. Through a variety of offline activities such as thematic salons, study tours, and public service actions, young Chinese language learners will be guided to gain a deeper understanding of the real China, a comprehensive understanding of the excellent Chinese traditional culture and the overall development of contemporary Chinese society. Meanwhile, the interest and enthusiasm of international students in China to learn Chinese will be further inspired, and the understanding and recognition of promoting mutual appreciation of civilizations and building a community with shared future for mankind will be further enhanced.
