Los Angeles, CA – April 12, 2019 – Without a name, you have no voice. Without a voice, you have no name. Watch ‘NONA’ today: https://nonamovie.com/watch.
From talented director / writer / cinematographer, Michael Polish (Big Sur, Twin Falls Idaho, Northfork) and executive produced and starring, Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns, The Long Road Home, Netflix’s I-Land), NONA (aka ‘No Name’) puts a face to the stark reality of worldwide human trafficking.
“Human trafficking is one of the biggest issues that has been flying under the radar for years and years. Out of desperation or out of bring naive, it is a global issue affecting countless lives every day. The 2017 drama film NONA tackles the issue of human trafficking in a way that reminds us that this business is simply ruthless,” wrote Reel Advice.
Specifically putting a human face to Central America’s human trafficking industry, NONA showcases the unbound limits a young girl is willing to go for freedom. NONA follows a charming traveler, Hecho (Jesy McKinney), who approaches a young Honduran girl, Nona (Sulem Calderon). Offering to safely smuggle her into the United States where she can reunite with her mother, the two embark on an idyllic love-story like road trip. But, Nona’s hope of future prosperity and happiness is shattered when they approach the Mexican border, as Hecho’s true and sinister intentions are revealed. Hecho’s manipulation reveals to audiences the real-life dangers both women and men face today within the dangerous underworld of sex trafficking. Told through Nona’s eyes, the raw and heartbreaking world sheds lights on such unspeakable and inhumane horrors that still exist today.
“We all are [Nona] in a way – Dreamers and real people. I put a lot of myself into the role and I carry her with me even now that it’s finished,” stated Calderon in recent interview with Paul Stathakis.
Exploring dark themes including death and human trafficking, Calderon revealed in the interview that it was difficult to emotionally prepare for her first feature role. “It was hard to go there emotionally, to feel that helplessness and fear, even for a moment as an actor. But the hard reality is that this happens to millions of people around the world. I felt a responsibility to that. I had no choice but to dig deep. I obviously have no idea what its actually like, but I did the best I could to put myself in that world so audiences could, hopefully, do the same,” stated Calderon.
Headed for her next project alongside McKinney, the two will star in the upcoming 2020 Jungle Cruise with Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place, The Devil Wears Prada) and Dwayne Johnson (Jumanji, Moana, G.I. Joe: Retaliation).
“NONA is a good take on the topic of human trafficking. It had a twist that we failed to catch and more importantly great acting,” wrote Reel Advice, adding that the film “shows glimpses on how ruthless and deceptive human trafficking really is.”
