Girls are marching forward in the field of technology and programming, but still a lot remains to be done. While adults are doing their bit, here is a fresh perspective and a new initiative by a budding programmer and tech leader, Arushi Aggarwal, whose non-profit, Unknown16, has launched Coding Supergirls, a set of three female superhero characters created by Arushi to inspire young girls to take up tech and programming related careers.
Unknown16 is a non-profit founded to encourage and support girls in the STEM fields. The organization aims to reduce the gender gap in STEM fields, and especially assist girls to undertake projects that address important social issues. Unknown16 is an effort to instill passion for technology at an early age.
What makes Unknown16 unique from other such initiatives is that it encourages girls to address real world challenges by using STEM related methods. It is therefore a refreshing change to see girls using programming and tech to address social causes, and Unknown16 has an ample number of such projects to solve social issues. Giving them inspiration to achieve more are the coding Supergirl characters.
Coding Supergirls don’t fly or perform mind bending stunts, but rather show their genius in using technology to bring about changes. The first supergirl is Curii, who is curious and imaginative, and knows how to convert real life problems into logical blocks. The second supergirl, Pari, is passionate about programming, while the third, Ina, has a knack for discovering bugs in programs. Together, the three supergirls make for a formidable combination.
“Technology today is all pervasive, and a requirement for virtually any field. Unknown16 has been founded to instill a love for STEM in girls. Our aim is to show to girls how innovative and creative they can be and encourage them to develop ideas that are powerful, disruptive, and cutting-edge,” says Arushi Aggarwal of Unknown16.
Just like the supergirl characters she has created, Arushi wants every girl to pursue their interests and reveal their talent. With Unknown16, she is not only fulfilling her own dream, but also helping other girls like her discover their genius in the various STEM fields.
Unknown16 welcomes inquiries for starting one’s own chapter, to become a mentor, join hands as a partner, or sponsor the initiative.
