The U.S. ranks fifth globally in commercial printing exports with a 9% share (based on USD), trailing Singapore (12%), Germany (11%), China (10%) and Cambodia (10%). In 2015, the U.S. exported 3,399 million USD, 7% under the previous year. From 2007 to 2015, U.S. commercial printing exports showed mixed dynamics. A significant drop in 2009 was followed by a weak rebound the following year. In 2011, exports leveled off, but then began to decline steadily through to 2015. Despite a recovery attempt in 2010, exports failed to reach their peak level of 2008.
The decline of exports in recent years has had the effect of reducing opportunities for growth in the domestic commercial printing (except screen and books) industry.
In 2015, the main destination of U.S. commercial printing exports was Canada (43%), followed distantly by Mexico (14%) and the UK (7%). The share exported to Canada, however, illustrated negative dynamics (-4 percentage points), whereas the share sent to Mexico increased (+5 percentage points). The share of the UK remained relatively stable from 2007 to 2015.
From 2008 to 2014, the U.S. was a net exporter of commercial printing, with a trade surplus decreasing from the peak level of 528 million USD in 2009 to approximately 122 million USD in 2013. Over the years, however, that surplus not only evaporated but turned into a 566 million USD trade deficit in 2015, driven by falling exports while imports remained relatively stable.
