Utelize have pledged support to help fund the opening of a new Solar Learning Lab in South Africa, working with Computer Aid International.
Built from converted shipping containers, these computer labs are solar-powered, which means they are self-sufficient and can be placed just about anywhere. Each project is run with the support of a local partner and offers a local community long-term access to technology and training to help develop digital skills. Providing an opportunity for young learners to benefit directly from the expertise of in-country trainers and gain first-hand experience with technology and the Internet.
Utelize; an IT managed service provider; specialising in mobile workforce technology, IoT and mobile data services, will raise funds for the project with the support of their strategic channel partners and corporate customers, by donating 100% of the proceeds from recycled mobile devices and unused IT hardware to the project. In return, the businesses who gift their devices receive a device inventory and certified data wipe of their devices to ensure they are free of corporate and personal data.
Matt Atkinson, Managing Director of Utelize believes the partnership with Computer Aid is a natural fit that will really appeal to their existing corporate customers and partners who are looking for better ways to dispose of unused and end of life smartphones and tablets. “Utelize’s services are all about simplifying the process of deploying and managing technology for mobile and remote workers in large organisations. We all know that unused and end of life mobile devices like smartphones and tablets can be recycled and resold, however the reality is that too many of these unused devices never get beyond being stored in drawers, cupboards or boxes in the IT department, often without being data wiped. The initial response that we’ve had to the project from IT Directors and CIO’s has been really positive, and we’ve already received material commitments to gift unused devices.”
Commenting on the new partnership, Alice Walker-Mitchell, Marketing Officer at ComputerAid said, “We’ve seen first-hand how access to technology can change lives, so for Utelize to take this corporate initiative and help us open a new Solar Learning Lab will mean a great deal to a lot of people.”
The Solar Learning Lab project, in association with Dell Technologies, has so far opened 23 labs in 11 countries, with plans to expand to 3 new countries in 2021. Computer Aid International are working towards a world where everyone has equal access to ICT. They aim to achieve this by offering secure IT disposal for organisations who want to donate equipment, subsidising computers for non-profits worldwide, and running educational projects to improve ICT education.
