Vehicle History, a company that was created to help consumers in the automotive marketplace, wants to warn people about car insurance scams in Las Vegas.
“The truth is that Vegas is Vegas,” said Vanessa Hernandez, a VehicleHistory.com spokeswoman. “If someone can grift an unsuspecting victim, then they will, and auto insurance is just one of the many grifts that causes money to drift from people’s pockets.”
The most common car insurance scam, she said, comes when tourists rent a car while in Las Vegas.
“A tourist books a car for $99 for the weekend, but when they arrive they’re told that they have to spend another $100 on insurance,” she said. “That’s simply untrue. A credit card covers a customer’s insurance for a rental car, as does homeowner’s and renter’s insurance. No one ever needs to buy additional insurance when booking a rental car.”
The second-most common car insurance scam in Las Vegas, she said, is that new residents are told by used car dealerships that they have to buy very expensive insurance through them.
“No one should let a used car dealership try to sell anyone insurance,” said Hernandez. “It’s not their business. Their business is putting customers behind the wheel of a piece of steel that will get them where they want to go. Feel free to complain, and loudly, if they insist on it.”
In order to help Las Vegas consumers avoid getting taken advantage of by scammers, Vehicle History has launched a service that allows people to search for what their appropriate car insurance rates in Las Vegas should be.
“When people can simply click a few buttons online and find the actual price of reasonable Las Vegas car insurance, then the grifters will drift into the background,” she said. “We are here to make that happen, so people will no longer be clueless.”
The free insurance comparison service will soon be expanded to other major cities, said Hernandez.
“There are different factors that make Las Vegas car insurance different from insurance in Miami or New Orleans,” she said. “We want to make sure that even though our service is free, it is still useful for everyone, no matter where they live. The only way we can do that is with a slow rollout.”
