On April 28, a team of five sophomore students will compete in the second Cupcake Wars competition of four schools. Hosted at the Valley Center High School, students will bake and create a cupcake display following this year’s Summertime Fun theme. WUSD students have been preparing for this competition with weekend meetings since January and are eager to bake their cupcake for the panel of judges.
WUSD competed for the first time last year against Valley Center, Mountain Empire, and Ramona High Schools. All teams, consisting of five students in all four years of high school, created a display that matched the Spring Fling theme. The WUSD team presented a Japanese cherry blossom tree in bloom with dark forest chocolate cupcakes that were topped with cherry frosting made from scratch and handmade cherry blossom decorations.
Teams are only allowed to work on aspects of the display within the specified time slots. On the day of the competition, students must make the frosting from scratch until the judges arrive. Then, the students are given time to decorate the four dozen cupcakes and put the display together. All teams are required to leave the room for the judges to taste and explore the delicious creativity of the students. The panel takes time to judge the moistness, taste, and secret ingredient of the cupcakes. The winning team must present the best taste and creative execution, and is awarded with medals and a trophy for their school.
As defending champions from last year, the WUSD team is excited to share what they have prepared with spectators at this year’s competition.
